Paramedic Clinical Practice 4 - Speciality care ( 3 points, SCA Band 2, 0.063 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit continues to develop the role of the paramedic as a clinician. It will build on the model of Paramedic clinical competence and the context of Paramedic clinical practice commenced in BEH2031, and continued in BEH2032 and BEH2042. It will provide the context to support the theory units concurrently undertaken in this semester, BEH3011 and BEH3021. Supervised clinical experience will be undertaken over 4 weeks in specialist hospitals, including obstetric care, neonates, sick children, and psychiatry, and one week of visits to specialty units relating to this semester.

Objectives: By the completion of this unit, the student will be able to: 1. demonstrate an ability to review his/her own clinical experience and arrange suitable learning experiences to maintain learning needs relevant to the clinical experience in specialist hospitals; 2. demonstrate progress in the development of clinical, professional and leadership capabilities from novice to beginner paramedic through clinical experience within specialist hospitals; 3. demonstrate an ability to respond under supervision to real life problems from their initiation and at assimilate information quickly and communicate it clearly and unambiguously as experienced in the setting of specialist hospitals; 4. demonstrate an ability in a team, to apply theoretical knowledge and clinical skills learnt in this course to the care of patients in specialist hospitals using the model of Paramedic clinical competence; and 5. demonstrate a culturally sensitive approach to the recognition and management of the reactions of patients and family to acute illness or injury as experienced in the specialist hospital setting.

Contact Hours: The equivalent of 4 weeks full time supervised clinical placement - a total of 160 hours. The normal semester period is lengthened so that the essential professional requirement of the supervised clinical practice can be met.
