Synopsis: The special research project offers students an opportunity to undertake an extended supervised research project. Prior to the start of semester students are responsible for devising their topic as well as seeking approval from the course co-ordinator. The project is normally undertaken over the course of 13 weeks during a semester unit and is assessed by a suitably qualified staff member. Students are responsible to formulate their research topic in consultation with their supervisor.
Objectives: (1) To provide students with an opportunity to undertake an extended research project focusing on a topic of their particular interest. (2) To develop students' capacity to draw on a range of research methodologies suitable to their topic. (3) To develop students' capacity to undertake an analysis of suitable secondary data. (4) To develop students' written communication skills. (5) To develop students' capacity to tackle a particular issue, project or problem in depth.
Assessment: Major Research Essay or the equivalent of two articles (9000 - 10,000 words total): 9000 - 10,000 words 100%
Prerequisites: Special permission from the course co-ordinator.
