Issues in Australian Indigenous Archaeology ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Undergraduate
(ARTS)

Leader: TBA

Offered:
Not offered in 2005.

Synopsis: This unit commences with a basic examination of the aims, theories and techniques of archaeology. It briefly explores biological and cultural evolution in a global context that converges on traditional Aboriginal ways of life over the last 60,000 years. In particular, the hunting and gathering way of life will be studied through its archaeological expression. Several current social issues and debates, legislation, ethics, and politics in Australia are a persistent theme throughout. A day's excursion to some Gippsland sites is offered as well as the highly recommended field excursion during which two contextual lectures and tutorials will be held.

Objectives: Students successfully completing the second year Unit will: 1. Gain a detailed understanding of: (i) pre- and post-invasion social organisations; (ii) the importance of land; (iii) the nature of representations of Indigenous Australians; (iv) the multi-dimensional effects of and responses to invasion and colonisation. 2. Further develop their ability to critically analyse sources and to develop a sustained argument in essays and other papers. 3. Develop an understanding of the importance of discourses of 'Aboriginality'. 4. Develop an awareness of and ability to apply interdisciplinary perspectives to their studies. 5. Develop the ability to articulate analyses of specified topics and to critically analyse relevant theoretical approaches to Australian Indigenous Studies. 6. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the importance of ethical research and respect for Indigenous worldviews, speaking positions and goals. 7. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between 'knowledge' and 'power' and of the past as a site of historical and political contestation. 8. Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which theories of 'race' and experiences of racism have impacted upon Indigenous Australians and of contemporary discourses of 'race'.
