Synopsis: Issues of identity and the telling of life stories. Retracing history in literature from an Indigenous perspective. Racial stereotyping of Indigenous people in literature by white authors and the emergence of a 'black viewpoint'. Themes of identity in Indigenous poetry and drama.

Assessment: Essay (1000 words): 25% + Essay (1500 words): 30% + Examination (2 hour): 45%

Contact Hours: 3 hours (1 x 2 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week

Prerequisites: At Clayton campus, this unit is only available to students enrolled in Diploma in Arts (Australian Indigenous Studies)
