Course description

This three-year multidisciplinary course will equip students for work in the field of biotechnology. Biotechnology is a key technology in many developed and developing countries, and there is a high demand for appropriately trained personnel.

Course structure

Students in the BSc(Biotech) will specialise in industrial aspects of biotechnology incorporating a core that covers biochemistry, bioprocess technology, genetics and genomics, microbiology, molecular biology, natural product chemistry, principles of modern instrumentation, experimental design and data analysis. In addition, the science laboratories are well equipped with highly sophisticated analytical instruments and with highly trained teaching staff on hand to guide the students. The Malaysia campus is equipped with a physical containment laboratory (PC2 level and above) for the manipulation of genetics material through genetic engineering and cloning.

Course requirements

Students must complete 108 points of core units plus 36 points of elective studies, with no more than 60 points of level-one units overall. Elective units may be chosen from any faculty at the Malaysia campus, including units offered for other science courses.

* Students whose intake was before 2003 are required to complete either GEN2052 or BTH2802 as one of their level-two core units.

The maximum time for completion of the course is 10 years, including intermissions.
