Course description

This course aims to provide a post-degree level of study for students seeking to widen their knowledge in one of the specialist areas offered by the departments and to expose students to both substantive theory and practice of research in the field of business. The course gives graduates the training necessary to conduct independent high-quality research in either business or academic settings, cultivates analytical and critical skills, and an awareness of emerging developments in business. The course is particularly suited to those who may wish to undertake further study at the higher degree level.
The mode of offering varies between departments, and students should consult the department with which they are enrolled for honours. The management stream must be studied full-time by on-campus attendance.

Entry requirements

A bachelors degree from an approved tertiary institution. Applicants need to have attained a minimum average grade of 65% in the relevant disciplines in the final two years of undergraduate studies for consideration.

Course structure

Majors and other studies

The degree offers selected students the opportunity for specialised study in banking and finance, management, marketing (subject to faculty board approval) or taxation at an advanced level. All studies are confined to the area of specialisation chosen.

Course requirements

The degree requirements are:

Banking and finance stream

(a) Completion of five compulsory units (48 credit points):

Management stream

(a) Completion of four compulsory units (42 credit points):

(b) Completion of one further unit (six credit points) as follows:
(i) Those students who have not completed MGF3421 (Introductory management research methods) in their third year of study will be required to undertake this unit as their additional unit, or
(ii) The third-year or fourth-year units taught by the departments of Management, Accounting and Finance, Business Law and Taxation, Econometrics and Business Statistics, Economics, and Marketing. Third-year units may be undertaken on the condition that the unit has not been undertaken in third year, and that the appropriate prerequisites are met. Additionally, third-year units must be supplemented by additional supervised work. In order to undertake a unit from another department, the head of the Department of Management must be satisfied that the unit forms a coherent part of the proposed course of study.

Marketing stream*

(a) Completion of five compulsory units (48 credit points):

Taxation stream

The degree requirements are:
(a) Completion of eight units (48 credit points) from the list below:

or
(b) Completion of BTF4900 (Research report) (12 credit points) and six units (36 credit points) from the units listed in (a) above, except BTF4310.
For the purpose of both options, students may take up to two equivalent units from any other department, subject to approval by the course coordinator.
