This course is an interdisciplinary program covering comparative moral theory, research bioethics in an international setting, quantitative and qualitative research methodology, critical appraisal techniques and relevant law. Particular emphasis is given to ethical issues associated with research in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific Region. Students will gain a strong theoretical framework, significant experience with ethics committees and considerable involvement with local organisations concerned with the development of bioethical policy and its implementation. This course is currently funded by the US National Institutes of Health.
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree plus relevant work experience in a range of disciplines including medicine, science arts, and law; a curriculum vitae; professional and language references; a personal statement outlining reasons for wanting to do the course, including the relevance of research bioethics to the applicant's future career path; a letter of support from institution or employer expressing commitment to leave employment open for the duration of the course, and to ensure that on the students return their role in the organisation will involve research bioethics. (Applicants for a fully funded place in the MIRB course must be working in low or middle-income countries in the Asia-Pacific region and be in a position to contribute to the strengthening of health research ethics policy and processes in their country after the course.
This course is studied full-time over one year on-campus. Students must undertake 12 core units.
Assessment includes written assignments, practical exercises, oral presentations and examinations.
