Course description

This course, offered by the School of Nursing & Midwifery, has been specifically designed to assist registered nurses in the practice of caring for older clients across a broad variety of acute, post-acute and residential aged-care clinical environments. The course also assists registered nurses who wish to research and further understand the phenomenon of the ageing process and health potential and deficits commonly associated with ageing.

Entry requirements

Applicants would normally have a degree in nursing or a related discipline; registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria (Division 1 or be eligible for registration); and at least one year of nursing experience. Experience in the relevant area of practice is desirable.

Course structure

This one-year part-time course consists of two 12 credit-point units offered over two semesters. The course is offered by off-campus learning or by multimode (ie a combination of optional on-campus tutorials/seminars and off-campus learning modes). Successful completion of the course requires the study of the following core units.

Assessment

To satisfy assessment requirements, it is expected that students will network with practitioners and agencies in the field of gerontic nursing. Students will be required to perform a health assessment on an older person in their clinical environment or in an area of nursing practice approved by the course coordinator.
Assessment includes assignments, examination, fieldwork report, literature review and contribution to computer conferencing activities.
