This course, offered by the School of Nursing & Midwifery, aims to facilitate advanced practice for nurses practising in all medical and surgical areas. This is achieved through the development of skills and knowledge in the areas of pathophysiology, advanced health assessment and clinical practice.
Applicants would normally have a Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent; registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria (eg Division 1 or be eligible for registration); and at least one year of professional clinical experience. Special entry may be available. Students must have clinical support for the duration of the course.
This one year, part-time course consists of two 12-credit-point units offered over two semesters. Study days are in blocks of two-to-four days per month spread over each semester. Students must engage in a minimum of three days per week paid employment in an acute hospital setting over the duration of the course. In the specialty unit, students will be introduced to the concepts of risk management and advanced practice issues in clinical practice. Students are required to undertake the following two units.
Assessment includes case study reports, tests, online tutorial discussion groups, clinical skills, exams, clinical performance, advanced life support assessment, learning packages and assignments.
