* Offered on a cohort basis only.
This course is designed to accommodate teachers at all levels seeking to improve their professional competence, to further their understanding of the processes of second language learning and teaching, and to broaden their qualifications.
Candidates will usually hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification
from a recognised tertiary institution or an approved post-Year 12 major (or
approved equivalent) in a language other than English, have demonstrated
proficiency in the language and hold a recognised teaching qualification. Prior
to enrolment, all students must have their proposed course approved by the LOTE
program coordinator.
Note that teachers who wish to upgrade their qualifications to be eligible for
a teaching position in their LOTE need to have completed the language
requirement prior to entering the course. Those who have only one LOTE unit to
complete may seek permission of the course coordinator to undertake this as
part of the postgraduate diploma.
The course consists of 48 credit points of study. Students will complete four 12-point units (three specialist elective units and one general elective unit):
* EDF6224 is mandatory for those teachers wishing to be fully qualified for employment with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Qualified LOTE teachers must choose another postgraduate unit relevant to the course as approved by the course coordinator.
This is a conceptual outline only. It
gives a general indication of how the course will progress and is subject to
change without notice. Students should consult their course coordinator to
assist in planning their program. Check the current timetable for unit
availability via the website address at
http://www.education.monash.edu.au/students/current/timetables after 30
September.
Candidates who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma of Education
(LOTE) may complete a masters degree by undertaking up to a further two units
(including a research core unit).
