Course description

This double degree course aims to provide a course of direct relevance to those involved in commerce either as legal advisers or in the private, commercial or government sectors and to enhance relevant skills for students seeking placements in legal, commercial and governmental regulatory and compliance positions especially in Australia and Asia.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to have completed:

• a degree from a recognised tertiary institution with an average grade of credit or above, and
• a minimum of two years relevant full-time post-degree work experience, preferred four years.

Advanced standing

Candidates should consult the MBA Programs office regarding the advanced standing criteria for the MBA.

Fees

This course is offered on a fee-paying basis:

• 2005 domestic student fees: $19,000 per annum ($2420 per unit)
• 2005 international student fees: $22,400 per annum ($2800 per unit)

The fees quoted are provided as a guide only and are subject to final approval by the university late in 2004.
For future years of the course, Monash University reserves the right to adjust annual tuition fees. However, Monash University undertakes that any adjustment factor will not exceed 10% per annum.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete 10 core units (60 credit points):

• MBA9001 Managerial and leadership skills
• MBA9002 The legal environment of business
• MBA9003 Economics for managers
• MBA9004 Accounting for business
• MBA9005 Corporate finance
• MBA9006 Marketing
• MBA9007 Business analysis and planning
• MBA9008 Managing people at work
• MBA9009 Managing information
• MBA5005 Strategic management

(b) Students must complete 10 units (60 credit points) from the Master of Laws units as follows:
A candidate with a degree in a discipline other than law will be required to complete the unit LAW7212 (Australian legal system) unless an exemption is granted) plus at least five other units offered as part of the Master of Laws specialising in commercial law. The remaining units may be taken from any units offered in the Master of Laws coursework program. The units in the specialisation will be those that are specified from time to time by the Faculty of Law Board on the recommendation of the Postgraduate Studies Committee of the faculty.

Additional unit requirements

Note that within this framework, Master of Commercial Law (MCL) students can take up to two units from faculties other than the Faculty of Law, subject to approval of the course director (MCL); or up to four units approved for the Master of Law and Taxation, Faculty of Business and Economics, provided the course director (MCL) is satisfied that the unit does not substantially duplicate a unit previously completed by the candidate
