This course seeks to develop a strategic understanding of how the industry operates and is designed for those students who desire to undertake some original research in close association with the industry. Students are encouraged to conduct research internationally with universities that have exchange agreements with Monash. The course is open to students who hold an honours degree in tourism (H2A or above) or a cognate discipline. At the recommendation of the course coordinator and the director of the National Centre for Australian Studies and with the approval of the faculty, students with exceptionally good results (distinction average or above) in their graduate diploma, including proven research experience at distinction level, may be admitted into the MA by coursework/ research combined.
Candidates must complete the following compulsory unit and choose an additional unit to the value of 12 points as approved by the course coordinator.
Studnts must complete a 20,000 to 25,000-word 66% thesis.
Candidates undertaking a 66% research load will normally be required to enrol for all of the units in the coursework component on the Clayton campus and may then apply for transfer to external candidature.
The minimum pass grade for units in the MA in Tourism is 60 C, ie a grade of credit or above is required in every unit and for the thesis.
