This program provides some coursework as a foundation for students undertaking a substantial piece of research relating to international development theory, policy or practice. The course extends the knowledge, research and writing skills of people already working in, or seeking employment in, organisations involved in international or sustainable development.
Candidates must have either an honours degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum H2A grade or equivalent, or have undertaken significant research at a postgraduate level with a minimum grade of distinction for the research component. Professionals with an undergraduate degree and substantial work experience in international development may be considered for the course but may be required to undertake a 12-point independent research unit as a qualifying requirement before embarking on the major research project.
Candidates are required to successfully complete a total of 24 points of coursework units, including 12 points of international development units at fifth-year level; and 12 points of other level 5 units approved by the international development program coordinators. Candidates also complete a 66% thesis of 20,000 to 25,000 words. Research topics are determined in consultation with the program coordinators and research supervisors. The minimum pass grade for the thesis and Master of International Development Studies units is 60 C or above. For detailed information and lists of other units available, contact one of the course coordinators.
