Master of Multimedia Design

Course description

This specialist coursework masters degree recognises the particular practical skills and mindset that are required to work as a multimedia designer. It acknowledges the specialist skills in design strategy, development and communication necessary to work effectively in this area. Students gain a sound working knowledge of multimedia elements including text, image, sound, animation and video. The coursework aspects of the degree are complemented by theoretical discussions on the recent history of multimedia design and where it might progress in the future. Graduates will emerge as skilled practitioners in the area and should also be able to critically assess and contribute to the future of multimedia design. The units are a blend of studio practice and lectures. Assessment is based on project work, written and verbal presentations and assignments.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a bachelors degree in art or design from Monash University or an equivalent qualification from another tertiary institute or university approved by the faculty. Applications should be accompanied by 10 to 15 pieces of recent, relevant work. These may be presented on a CD, as slides or as colour printouts, which must be clearly numbered with a corresponding list of details attached.

Advanced standing

Up to 24 credit points may be granted for previously completed similar graduate-level units which have not been counted towards the award of any other degree or diploma. For similar undergraduate units, students will normally be required to make substitutions.

Course structure

The course consists of nine coursework units, with a total of 72 credit points:

Full-time mode: three semesters
First year
Semester one
Semester two
Second year
Semester one
Part-time mode

Part-time mode will be offered subject to final enrolment numbers. Study pattern to be determined in consultation with course coordinator.

Exit points

The program can be exited after one or two semesters of full-time study or the equivalent. Students exiting after successfully completing one semester of study (24 credit points) take out the Graduate Certificate in Multimedia Design. Students exiting after successfully completing two semesters of study (48 points) take out the Graduate Diploma of Multimedia Design.
