Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management

Course code: 2870 + Off-campus (Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Central and Eastern Clinical School, Alfred Hospital) + Full-fee-paying course: $TBC (Australian residents) (not available to international students)

The course is specifically designed for professionals working within the health care sector who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in the management of health services. It provides core competencies in health services management, including leadership, human resource and financial management of health services that can be built upon in the Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management and then the Master of Health Services Management or the Master of Public Health.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline and relevant professional experience. The department will individually assess applications from students without a three-year degree.

Attendance

Most units have a 15-hour block of face-to-face teaching in Melbourne during one week of the semester. Units are coordinated to allow students to attend the teaching sessions of two units in the same week. The teaching sessions are interactive and experiential and aim to discuss, clarify and reinforce the course content and assessment requirements. A number of guest lecturers who are recognised experts in the health services management field are involved. Block teaching is followed by weekly internet-based coursework for
most units.

Course structure

The course comprises 24 credit points and consists of two core and two elective units taken over a 12-month period of two part-time semesters. It is not offered on a full-time basis.

Assessment

Assessment consists of written assignment, web-based tasks, individual and group presentations.
