Graduate Certificate in General Practice Psychiatry

Course code: 2077 + Off-campus (offered by Monash's Department of General Practice, in conjunction with Melbourne University's Department of Community Medicine and Public Health and Department of Psychiatry) + Full-fee-paying course: $TBC (Australian residents); $7250 (international students)

The course aims to equip general practitioners with the knowledge and skills required to effectively assess and manage psychiatric conditions in the general practice setting. It also aims to provide general practitioners with an appreciation of the content and context of psychiatric illness in the community, while assisting general practitioners to gain a clear understanding of their role as therapists, gatekeepers and members of a multidisciplinary team engaged in patient-centred care.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be graduates with a minimum of two years of postgraduate experience who are currently registered by the medical board in their respective states, or who have a qualification that is registrable in a state of the Commonwealth. Preference will be given to applicants currently employed in active general practice. Applicants for individual units and not for award will be considered from a variety of backgrounds including overseas trained doctors. Special consideration will be given to suitably qualified overseas graduates residing in their own country.

Course structure

The course is conducted part-time over two semesters and comprises coursework and non-compulsory residential workshops. The course consists of the seven part-time units listed below and the option to participate in two residential weekend workshops (recommended but not compulsory).

Australian candidates enrolled in the diploma will be eligible for an appropriate number of points for vocational registration purposes.
