General faculty information

Unless otherwise stated in the individual course entry sections in this publication, fees information, English language requirements, special requirements and advanced standing are standard and are listed below:

Fees

Undergraduate

Local students

Commonwealth-supported (HECS) places available

• Full fee: $15,600 (2004) per annum
• Single unit fee: $1950 (2004) per unit

International students

• International fee: $19,000 (2005) per annum
• Single unit fee: $2375 (2005) per unit

Graduate

Local students

• Full fee: $15,000 (2004) per annum
• Single unit fee: $1875 (2004) per unit

International students

• International fee: $20,400 (2005) per annum
• Single unit fee: $2550 (2005) per unit

The local student fees quoted are provided as a guide only and are subject to final approval by the university late in 2004. For future years of your course, Monash University reserves the right to adjust annual tuition fees to take into account increases in university and course delivery costs. However, Monash University undertakes that any adjustment factor will not exceed 10 per cent per annum.

English language requirements for international students

Undergraduate courses

The English language requirements for all Business and Economics undergraduate courses of Monash University are satisfied by meeting one of the following criteria:

• English language is the first language.
• English was the language of instruction in secondary and/or tertiary studies completed.
• Satisfactory performance in secondary or tertiary studies already completed in an English-speaking country.
• Achieving a satisfactory level of performance in an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level.
• Achieving a test score of at least 580 in the American Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and a score of at least 5 on the Test of Written English (TWE).
• Achieving a test score of 6 or better on the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) test. A score band of 6 or above in each individual band is the normal requirement.
• Successful completion of the English for Academic Purposes (Direct Entry Program), Monash University English Language Centre.

Postgraduate courses

Postgraduate applicants may satisfy English language requirements in any of the following ways:

• English language is the first language.
• English was the language of instruction of successfully completed tertiary studies of at least two years duration.

For students who do not satisfy the above requirements:

• IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) - achieving a minimum test score of 6.5 - a score of at least 6 is required in each individual band, or
• TOEFL (American Test of English as a Foreign Language) - achieving a minimum test score of at least 580 with a TWE score of 5, or a computer-based TOEFL score of 237 with an essay rating (ER) score of 5.

Documentary evidence must be provided with application.

Special requirements

PC requirement

Access to an IBM-compatible computer is essential for the use of word processing and other software packages. It is also recommended that off-campus learning students have access to a modem to facilitate email communication with teaching staff and access to web-based teaching material.

Advanced standing for previous studies

Normally a student is entitled to advanced standing to a maximum of 50 per cent of the course requirement. Details of the faculty's advanced standing policies can be found at http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/calendar/facultyregs/regs-bus.html. Applicants should check each course for conditions on advanced standing upon application.
Applications for advanced standing must clearly indicate units for which advanced standing is requested and must be accompanied by legally certified documentation of academic transcript and unit syllabus usually from the course handbook.
