The Bachelor of Cognitive Science is a multidisciplinary degree focusing on thinking in people and machines. The core of the program draws mostly on cognitive psychology, information technology and philosophy and deals with cutting-edge issues such as whether machines can think or be conscious and how best to use what we know about human thinking in designing intelligent artificial systems. Graduates often gain employment in the information technology industry but they are also in demand in other fields such as education, robotics, medical instrumentation, virtual reality/multimedia applications and security systems design.
Satisfactory completion of VCE or equivalent. Applicants will be expected to have a study score of at least 25 in English (any) and a study score of 20 in mathematics (any). Mature-age applicants are assessed on the basis of other qualifications and work experience relevant to the degree and must meet the university minimum entry requirements.
Candidates who have successfully completed approved tertiary studies (either at Monash or elsewhere) may receive credit in respect of equivalent studies at the university. It is the responsibility of the applicant to supply full details of the content of units for which credit is sought, plus official verification that these units have been successfully completed. As a general rule, credits will not be granted for studies completed more than 10 years prior to the date of enrolment in the current course.
All off-campus learning students will need to have access to a personal computer, CD-ROM drive and the internet.
The course of study is normally six years part-time by off-campus
learning. In order to meet the requirements for the Bachelor of Cognitive
Science degree, students must complete:
(a) a major in cognitive psychology (48 points):
(b) a sequence in information technology (42 points):
(c) four philosophy units (24 points)
(d) one core mathematics unit
(e) four electives from any discipline
(g) a total of 144 points.
Students entering the degree with no previous studies are advised to enrol in the following units.
