Typographic studies (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On completion of this unit, students will: 1.effectively use the elements and principles of design; 2.create design structures, grids, layout and composition; 3.work with texts, creating a hierarchy; 4.examine typography in two and-three dimensions; 5.produce more sophisticated type rendered by hand or generated by computer; 6.explore experimental typography; 7.use type to create an emotional and intellectual impact with an understanding of the relationship between type, image and language; 8.skilfully and expressively use both informative and artistic modes to create a holistic vision of the world of typography; 9.have a greater awareness of the historical development of typography; 10.examine the relationship between communication and form in relation to typographic practice; 11.understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study.

Assessment: Major projects: 70%. Minor projects: 30%

Contact Hours: 12 hours per week, including; 4 hours including: 1-hour lecture, one 3-hour studio and 8 independent study hours per week

Prerequisites: VCO1302 and OHS1000
