Synopsis:

Objectives: On completing this course students should have acquired a knowledge of basic Ukrainian grammar. They should be able to read, write and understand the standard language at a level of non-technical everyday communication, and to speak at a level of basic communication, using correct forms and pronunciation. Students should be able to translate texts of moderate difficulty into and out of Ukrainian with the aid of a dictionary. Students should also have gained an understanding of the development of Ukrainian literature in its Classicist, Romantic and Realist phases, a detailed knowledge of selected texts, and basic skills in literary analysis and criticism.

Assessment: Examination (2 hours): 40% + Language weekly homework (1000 words): 20% + Tutorial paper: 10% + Essay (1500 words): 30% + Students will choose from a list of essays requiring more advanced analytic skills than students of UKR1060.

Contact Hours: 4 hours (2 x 1 hour lectures and 2 x 1 hour tutorials) per week
