Women, Gender and Society (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: Students successfully completing this subject should develop: 1. A basic knowledge of feminist perspectives on Western society. 2. Skills in reading and analysing theoretical, empirical and popular texts. 3. The ability to think sociologically about gender issues and to connect personal experience with wider social forces. 4. The ability to communicate analysis in oral and written forms.

Assessment: Seminar presentation and report (2500 words): 50% + Class test (2 hours, 2000 words equivalent): 40% + Class presentation and participation: 10% + Third-year students will be expected to demonstrate a greater degree of sophistication in their written work.

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 2 hour seminar) per week

Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in Sociology or permission
