Sociology of Community Corrections (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On successful completion of this subject, students will have gained an understanding of: 1. The historical development of community corrections. 2. Probation and parole systems generally and those operating specifically in Victoria. 3. The various types of community correction orders and those operating specifically in Victoria. 4. The training and role of the community corrections officer. 5. Various prison leave programs including family, work and educational leave. 6. Issues associated with home detention programs. 7. The capacity to think analytically and to engage in informed debate, both verbal and written, on community corrections issues.

Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 50% + Oral Tutorial presentation (500 word equivalent): 10% + Exam (2 hours): 40%

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week

Prerequisites: SCY1100 and SCY1200 or equivalent
