Radiation therapy planning and treatment 2 (6 points)

(MED)

Leader: Ms Caroline Wright

Offered:
Clayton Second semester 2004 (OCL)
Clayton Second semester 2005 (OCL)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate and communicate a broad and critical conceptual and practical understanding of: 1. disease investigation and staging methods in relation to: (a) breast cancer, (b) lung and oesophagus cancer, (c) gynaecological and testicular cancers, (d) sarcomas, and (e) the relationship between external beam and brachytherapy modalities; 2. positioning, stabilisation and localisation methods with particular emphasis upon: (a) conventional simulation versus computed tomography in localisation and the positioning and stabilisation implications of both, (b) consideration of target volume/organ, critical/other normal tissues, imaging, patient measurement and contouring and (c) extended treatment distance techniques; 3. more advanced beam planning and shaping, plan production and dose calculation methods with specific reference to: (a) oblique and asymmetric beam geometry, (b) multileaf collimation (MLC), (c) junctional and mono-isocentric techniques, (d) phased treatment regimes, (e) the concept of conformal treatment, (f) evaluation tools and methods, (g) the role and methods of intraluminal and intracavity brachytherapy techniques and (h)fabrication of treatment accessories including and beam attenuators and tissue compensators; 4. more advanced treatment delivery methods including: (a) equipment checks, (b) verification of the plan, (c) record and verify systems, (d) extended distance techniques, (e) isocentre/field position verification using real time electronic portal imaging devices (EPID), (f) relevant safety and quality issues and documentation standards and practices and (g) patient care and early and late side effects of treatment.

Assessment: Four clinical action plans and comparative reports: 10% + Written examination (two hours): 45% + Practical examination (one hour): 35% + Computer exercises: 10%

Prerequisites: Successful completion of all units in year 1 of the course
