Modern Christian Spiritualities (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to demonstrate: 1. An understanding of a representative selection of classical texts from the traditions of Christian Spirituality that have been important since the Reformation. 2. A familiarity with some key figures and writings of this area of the Christian tradition and how they relate to the society in which they were produced. 3. An ability to interpret and discuss critically documents illustrative of this period. 4. A familiarity with some expressions of the tradition of Christian Spirituality in contemporary society and the role these can play in the ecumenical enterprise. 5. An appreciation of ways in which the tradition and its contemporary expressions can enrich the life of the individual person.

Assessment: Introductory assignment (500 words): 10% + Two essays (1200 words each): 50% + Report of a liturgical experience (600 words): 10% + Written examination (1.5 hours): 30%

Contact Hours: 3 hours (2 x 1 hour lectures and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
