Advanced medical imaging (9 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On successful completion of this subject students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of patient care, infection control, safety issues and possible bio-effects, ethical issues and quality assurance involved in either medical ultrasound or multi-slice CT Ultrasound Specific Objectives 2. Describe and recognise the role of ultrasound in peripheral vascular, extracranial and obstetric ultrasound 3. Extend knowledge of fetal anatomy and embryology and peripheral vascular system with emphasis on pathophysiology 4. Demonstrate an understanding of spectral analysis, Colour, Power and Spectral Doppler imaging techniques pertaining to peripheral vascular and obstetric applications 5. Describe and understand methods, techniques, protocols and equipment selection utilised in first, second and third trimester ultrasound with emphasis on parameters used to assess gestational age, multiple pregnancy, growth and documentation thereof Multi-slice CT Specific Objectives 6. Understand and describe the basic Multi-slice CT protocols, technical parameters, patient preparation and positioning, for CT angiographic imaging 7. Understand and describe the basic technique for biopsy and drainage procedures performed under CT guidance 8. Understand the basic clinical principles of multi-slice imaging, including data acquisition and image reconstruction (volume rendering, Multi-Planar Reconstructions and Maximum Intensity Projections) 9. Understand the major differences and advantages the multi-slice has over single slice helical imaging 10. Demonstrate and describe CT imaging pathology

Assessment: Theory Examination (2 hour): 50% + Image Recognition (30 mins): 15% + Imaging Assignment (1000 words): 10% + Methods Assignments (2 x 1000 words): 15% + Imaging lab exercise: 10%
