MICA paramedic in an intergrated emergency medical system (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: By the completion of this unit the student should have/be able to: 1. An awareness of possible future trends in the delivery of pre-hospital services and the impact on the role fo the professional MICA paramedic. 2. Understand the application of evidence-based practice to the structure and operations of emergency medical systems. 3. Discuss the range of circumstances in which MICA may be used for inter-hospital transfers or retrievals and the responsibilities and role requirements of the MICA Paramedic during such cases; 4. Discuss the influences of a changing health care environment and population on the role of the MICA Paramedic. 5. Discuss the concept of ambulance based advanced life support systems, together with the role of a MICA Paramedic as an interdependent team member wihin an integrated emergency medical system; 6. Describe the clinical basis of the Advanced Medical Priority Dispatch System (AMPDS) and the Communications Centre processes; 7. Relate the contemporary issues and influences of emergency medical service systems to the role of the MICA Paramedic.

Assessment: Position statements 60%, assignment 40%

Contact Hours: 114 hours comprising lectures, tutorials, self-directed learning materials and WebCT; and 42 hours including reading, research and preparation of assessments

Prerequisites: Successful applicants must: have a bachelor's degree or equivalent; have a minimum of two years post qualification clinical experience; and be currently qualified Ambulance Paramedics currently employed by an ambulance service. Applicants without a degree will be considered if they have extensive relevant experience.
