Critical incident stress (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: This subject looks at the concept of traumatic stress and and the at risk populations. The techniques of demobilisation, debriefing and defusing are integrated with theoretical discussion with opportunities for demonstration of CISM and skills practice sessions. Factors that enhance the success of CISM are considered and students are provided with strategies for handling difficulties in group sessions such as blaming, mistakes and crying. The subject also identifies key approaches for establishing and maintaining psychological support programs in the workplace.

Assessment: Assignment: 55% + Participation in simulated debriefing session: 15% + Written report on simulated debriefing session: 30%

Contact Hours: 156 hours including 24 hours direct contact

Prerequisites: employment by an Ambulance Service
