Synopsis:

Objectives: On completion of this subject students are expected to be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of common law and statute law pertinent to nursing practice 2. Explain why the study of health law is an essential aspect of professional practice 3. Demonstrate an awareness of the legal implications of nursing actions taken in practice 4. Analyse the legal implications of the nurse's professional relationship with clients, their families and other health care providers 5. Identify strategies, which may provide assistance in resolving legal issues that arise in the various nursing areas 6. Discuss the significance of registration of professionals in the health care environment

Assessment: Written assignment (Legal scenario 2000 - 2500 words): 40% + On-line (WebCT) Quizzes (2 x 10-15 minutes each) 10% + Exam: 40%
