Developing a therapeutic alliance (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On completion of the unit, the students are expected to: 1. Appreciate the significance of counselling and be aware of the ethico-legal aspects of counselling. 2. Compare and contrast at least two models of counselling. 3. Relate self awareness to counselling. 4. Identify their counselling strengths and weaknesses. 5. Identify their interactional style. 6. Discuss the importance of communication skills in counselling. 7. Understand the concept of active listening. 8. Plan interventions and establish goals with clients that are mutually satisfactory. 9. describe specialist areas of counselling where a special application of the basic skill is required. 10. Understand the importance of maintaining the worker's state of well-being.

Assessment: Computer conferencing activities: 50% + Essay: 50% + mandatory satisfactory counselling skills assessment (assessed by students respective mentor)
