Asian Performance Studies (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit, the student will have: 1. Consolidated performance skills on the core instruments of the relevant ensemble or orchestra (from Java, or Sunda, or Sumatra, or India, or Thailand). 2. Become familiar with performance-related theories of relevant musical tunings, modes, tempi, rhythmic and melodic tendencies, and structures. 3. Studied the social context of the music and its use in accompanying theatre and dance. 4. The ability to discuss and write about the music cogently. 5. The ability to compose a work in an accepted style in the music-culture studied.

Assessment: Performance (including practice/performance diary): 50% + Music theory assignment: 10% + Essay (2000 words): 40% OR Composition assignment: 40%

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour practical performance class) per week

Prerequisites: Previous relevant practical experience and audition.
