Synopsis:
Objectives: At the completiong of this unit students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate appropriate communication skills and professional behaviour. 2. Complete relevant medical histories and perform appropriate clinical examinations for obstetrics and gynaecology. 3. Record an appropriate paediatric medical history. 4. Perform and appropriate paediatric physical examination. 5. Apply knowledge and concepts of children's growth and development to effective history taking and physical examination. 6. Identify illnesses and disorders occuring predominantly in children. 7. Discuss the management issues specifically related to paediatric patients. 8. Recognize the implications for the patient, family and community of paediatric conditions. 9. Identify the facilities available in the community for dealing with children. 10. Demonstrate competency in selected obstetric and gynaecological procedures/techniques. 11. Formulate reasonable investigation and management plans for patients in both obstetrics and gynaecology. 12. Observe relevant clinical practices in antenatal, postpartum and postnatal obstetrics. 13. Observe relevant clinical practices in general, fertility/infertility and oncological gynaecology. 14. Demonstrate appropriate and sympathetic counselling to patients for selected obsetric and gynaeological contexts.
Assessment: Continuous assessment (clinical skills, oral presentations and written reports - satisfactory completion required) + OSCE and written examination: 100%
Contact Hours: An 18-week rotation. Continuous attachement in a hospital environment.
Prerequisites: Pass all year 4 MBBS.
Corequisites: Must be enrolled in MBBS or MBBS/LLB
