Japanese 5 (Kanazawa) (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this subject, students should: 1. establish and maintain relationships with Japanese people, 2. be able to obtain information in Japanese on current affairs, from newspaper articles and other written materials in areas covered in this subject, 3. develop interview skills to obtain information from the Japanese people, 4. be able to recognize some Japanese grammatical features (i.e. particles, sentence patterns) in a systematic way, 5. be able to write and talk about places in Australia where Japanese people find interesting and the places in Japan where non-Japanese people find interesting, 6. be able to recognize the kanji introduced at previous levels, and 150 newly introduced characters as well as reviewing the previously learnt kanji (400) totaling 550, 7. develop and apply skills in Japanese word processing, 8. be able to use a kanji dictionary and develop skills that will enable them to continue their Japanese outside the classroom

Assessment: Mid-semester test (50 minutes): 15% + Final Examination (2 hours): 35% + Listening comprehension test paper 15% + Speaking test 10% + Fortnightly quizzes 10% + Major assignment (taped interview and report) 15%

Contact Hours: 3 hours per day over 5 weeks and excursions and participation in cultural activities

Prerequisites: Competence equivalent to Japanese 4
