Synopsis:

Objectives: Students successfully completing this unit should: 1. further develop the skills in using a wide range of grammar patterns, phrases and vocabulary appropriately in both written and spoken Japanese; 2. reinforce knowledge of the kyooiku kanji acquired so far (a total of 900 kanji) and develop knowledge of an additional 150 kanji frequently used in the Japanese media; 3. develop skills to gain information on current issues from newspaper articles, journals, books and on the Internet, and through interviews with Japanese people; 4. develop the skills to summarise the findings and express themselves in appropriate written forms, in group discussions and in presentation; and 5. have a firm foundation for the continued acquisition of both spoken and written Japanese at an advanced level.

Assessment: Quizzes and assignments 25% + Interview project Equivalent to (1250 words): 20% + Aural-oral test & visitor session 20% + Written test (2 hours): 35% Additional comment: Fifth-year students will be expected to demonstrate a greater degree of analytical and creative thinking in their project.

Contact Hours: 3 hours per day over 5 weeks and excursions and participation in cultural activities

Prerequisites: Completion of Japanese 7 or equivalent.
