Japanese 5 (Kanazawa) (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course students should: 1. be able to understand and use Japanese grammar at higher-intermediate level, 2. be able to recognise and use honorifics (keigo). 3. be able to obtain some knowledge of Japanese society and culture through reading and be able to speak and write about social and cultural issues, 4. be able to read and understand extracts from Japanese authentic texts of various genres, 5. develop listening and speaking skills on social issues, 6. be able to obtain information in Japanese from newspaper articles and other written materials including the Internet on the topics covered in Semester 2. 7. further develop and apply skills in Japanese word processing, 8. be able to recognize the kanji introduced at previous levels, and 150 newly introduced characters and develop strategies that will enable continued study of Japanese outside the classroom.

Assessment: Mid-semester test (50 minutes): 15% + Final Examination (2 hours): 35% + Listening comprehension test paper 15% + Speaking test 10% + Fortnightly quizzes 10% + Major assignment (1200 characters in Japanese): 15%

Contact Hours: 3 hours per day over 5 weeks and excursions and participation in cultural activities

Prerequisites: Competence equivalent to Japanese 4
