Synopsis:
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students will: 1. Understand the historical, political and social contexts of the changing position of Italian women in the twentieth Century, from the fascist period and the Resistance to the present day. 2. Appreciate and evaluate the theoretical background of the continuing tension between gender equality (pensiero della parit) and sexual difference (pensiero della differenza sessuale). 3. Be familiar with some post-World War II laws affecting women and the family (such as the laws on prostitution, divorce, abortion, equal employment opportunities and sexual violence). In addition, fourth-year students will be expected to develop a deeper theoretical understanding of issues connected with women's equality, difference and freedom.
Assessment: Examinations (2 hours): 40% + 2 assignments (1500 words each): 50% + 3 Seminar participation tasks: 10%
