'Reel Australia: History, film and Television in the 20th Century' (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this subject students will be able to: 1. Understand some of the key themes and preoccupations of twentieth-century Australian society: the ambivalent relationship with the 'mother country' in the post-federation era; the problematic legacy of the pursuit of a white Australia; the centrality of war in debates about national identity. 2. Recognize the ways in which makers of images have imagined and presented national identity, and how they have constructed and used the Australian past as part of this identity-making. 3. Compare Australian film culture with that of other national cultures, such as the USA. 4. Analyze various sources, especially film and television, and understand the different theoretical approaches underpinning such analyses, and communicate their findings both orally and in writing. 5. Gain experience in the planning and organization of a critical essay involving both primary and secondary sources.

Assessment: Two short tutorial exercises (500 words each): 20% + Class test (30 min.): 10% + Visual source analysis (500 words): 10% + Research essay (1,500 words): 35% + Examination (1 hour): 25%
