Synopsis:

Objectives: Upon completion of the subject students will: 1. Have gained a basic understanding of how to conduct research in German language studies and linguistics. 2. Appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of particular approaches to language research relative to the investigative task at hand. 3. Be able to collect, calibrate, describe, analyse and interpret German language data. 4. Have acquired the generic skills of compiling data and writing up of research reports. 5. Have learned how to account for linguistic variation in German, and describe varying discourse forms. 6. Have developed the ability to critically reflect on the heterogeneous nature of linguistic forms in German.

Assessment: Final test (1 hour): 25% + Library/ referencing/ resourcing exercise (750 words): 15% + Major research projects (2500 - 3000 words): 60%

Contact Hours: 3 hours (1 x seminar and 2 x tutorial) per week

Prerequisites: GRN2225, GRN2325, GRN2425 or GRN2525
