Synopsis:
Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students will have identified an animal welfare related issue requiring further research and working through the process of planning and designing a project with which to address this issue. Having completed this exercise they will be able to: 1. Complete a literature review, research proposal and an ethics application relevant to an animal welfare issue; 2. demonstrate considerable knowledge and skills in research design, in evaluating existing literature and in the conduct of research design in the field of animal welfare; 3. understand the complexity of scientific research and the value of careful problem analysis and planning in relation to ethical, budgetary and practical constraints; 4. appreciate the importance of discussing planned projects with a range of people, so as to benefit from different perspectives and the multidisciplinary approach now common in research institutions.
Assessment: Literature review (500 words): 10% + Written research proposal (500 words): 10% + Ethics application: 5% + Poster presentation: 5% + Research project (5000 words): 70%
