Statistics and Research Design for Professional Psychology (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On completion of this unit students will have acquired knowledge and attitudes regarding research appropriate for professional practice in psychology; be able to appreciate the role of scientific research in professional practice and the value of the scientist practitioner model; understand how to evaluate the validity of research conclusions critically, particularly in field settings; understand the theoretical and practical issues in selecting appropriate designs in field settings, appreciate special issues applying to both outcome and process research in professional practice, including selection of appropriate measures and the use of analogue studies; understand the statistical procedures commonly used in research, and be able to apply these appropriately by the use of a major computer statistical package.

Assessment: Three workshops are set aside to review progress with the multiple choice booklet problems. 50 item multiple choice test: (100%) which will be open book. There is no practice exam because the problems in this booklet look very like the problems that will be in the exam.

Prerequisites: Completion of an Australian Psychological Society (APS)-accredited major sequence in psychology
