Method and Practice of Teaching Languages other than English (LOTE) 2A (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: The learning objectives for this unit are to enable teacher trainees to understand the rationale behind languages' programs in primary schools, provide teacher trainees with an overview of the different types of language programs in primary schools and assist them with the preparation of lessons for such programs; introduce teacher trainees to CSF ll Pathway 1 for languages, and to the aims of the Early and Middle Years programs in primary schools in relation to literacy; examine the use of sociolinguistic profiling in designing a primary school language other than English curriculum; provide teacher trainees with a forum for analysing, discussing and proposing solutions to the issue of 'crowded curriculum' and its impact on languages' programs in primary schools.

Assessment: Two assignments (2500 -3000 words in total) 45% each; oral presentation 10%.

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week

Prerequisites: A 3 year post Year 12 major in a Language Other Than English at tertiary level or its equivalent
