Synopsis:
Objectives: The broad outcomes of this unit are for students to be able to understand the notion of the enacted curriculum. The overall aim of this Part B is to provide students with the opportunities to critically review some curriculum practices in their subject area, become aware of how literacy can be engaged with in science, and also to develop a unit plan that is able to be implemented into the classroom, potentially in the first year of employment; to become aware of the role of literacy in science curriculums; to develop a unit plan for a subject area within science. The learning outcomes for this unit are for students to be able to distinguish between the stated curriculum and the enacted curriculum; analyse and recognise episodes in the classroom that can be regarded to be instances of the enacted curriculum; explain the role of literacy in the science curriculum; become familiar with the educational system requirements in their discipline for pupils in Year 11 and 12; design and develop an appropriate unit plan for the senior science curriculum; progress towards being able to gauge the depth appropriate to each topic and each group of students; prepare topics by synthesis from a range of sources and to present the prepared curriculum material in a variety of ways; be willing to accept that science teachers, like all other staff, are teachers of literacy and mathematics; and create some appropriate assessment items for the unit of work developed.
Assessment: Unit Design: 60% and Presentation: 20%, Web Page Development: 20% (Clayton students); Unit Design: 60% and Assignments 40% (Gippsland students)
