Enabling literacy and numeracy (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On completion of this unit students should: i. be confident in planning for and engaging in, a range of experiences to foster children's language and literacy capabilities and mathematics learning within different socio-cultural contexts; ii. appreciate the need for and be able to engage in inclusive practices that respect the rights of all children (e.g. Culturally and Linguistically Diverse children, Indigenous children, 'at risk' children); iii. be able to identify the role of literacy and numeracy in other curriculum areas and contexts; iv. be confident to use a range of teaching and learning strategies; v. be able to use a variety of assessment techniques; vi. be able to identify key aspects in children's development of concepts and skills; vii. be able to identify the roles played by literacy and numeracy in contextualising multiple literacies in the classroom and in society; viii. be increasingly reflective of their own practice in literacy and numeracy teaching; ix. be able to adopt a critical approach to the literacy and numeracy in relation to the primary curriculum.

Assessment: Assignment 1: Planning, implementing and evaluating an intervention focusing on an identified group of diverse learners. (2000 words) 50% + Assignment 2: Justification and development of a contextualised unit of work. (2000 words) 50%
