Synopsis:

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to demonstrate an appreciation for the diversity of the life chances for each child and family and for the diversity of family structures and lifestyles; understanding of the systems theory and how it relates to teachers' work with families; understanding of the key issues concerned with the formation and implementation of legislation and government policies which impact on families; understanding of family focused research and an ability to relate that research to their role as teachers in a local community; understanding of the strategies that would support families in their childrearing responsibilities.

Assessment: Examination: 60% + Written assignment: 40% + Hurdle requirement: Eighty percent attendance for lectures and tutorials

Contact Hours: Equivalent to 2 hours per week
