Synopsis:
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to define what is meant by the following terms: sport, physical activity, fitness, wellness, and health; articulate their evolving philosophy of physical activity and wellness; demonstrate an awareness of the health benefits of physical activity, appropriate nutrition, stress management and making informed choices; describe the recommendations for health related physical activity and fitness across all ages; summarise the current participatory patterns of the general population in sport and physical activity while reflecting on their own participation behaviours; communicate reasons as to why people do and do not participate in sport and physical activity while reflecting on their own reasons for participating. Students should be able to apply these theoretical concepts and demonstrate skills through assessing, planning, implementing, managing and evaluating positive lifespan fitness and wellness behaviour needs; assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating practices in swimming; assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating practices in gymnastics; demonstrating an ability to guide others in making informed lifestyle choices whilst taking into account individual and or class needs.
Assessment: Assignment: 20% + Examination (2 hours): 40% + Healthy lifestyle logbook: 40% + Hurdle requirement: 80% attendance at practicals/tutorials.
