Socio-Cultural Elements of Sport and the Individual (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students will have developed knowledge and understanding of the language and concepts that shape the field of socio-cultural elements of sport and the individual; the major issues between the socio-cultural area, sport/outdoor recreation and physical activity; the major issues behind the history, philosophy and sociology of sports performance and participation; the tensions between the local and global and the personal and general with regards to sport/recreation; the social forces that are shaping current forms of sport and recreation; the social dynamics of sports participation; how to prepare a research paper and to present a coherent, logical argument, how to integrate theory and practical activity, the importance of critical and reflective thinking. Students should be able to apply these theoretical concepts and demonstrate skills by integrating theory with practical activities; integrating academic concepts and personal sport/recreation practices; working in a range of group situations.

Assessment: Book Review (1000 word equivalent): 25% + Major Paper (1800 word equivalent): 45% + Examination (2 hours - 1200 word equivalent): 30%
