Synopsis:

Objectives: Students who complete this unit successfully should have developed: 1. An understanding of major concepts within theatre history and aesthetics. 2. An appreciation of the qualitative and critical significance of key thinkers within the discipline of theatre studies. 3. The skills to interpret and engage with complex ideas about theatre. 4. A knowledge of, and capacity to utilise, appropriate methods of theatre research in order to prepare an essay or to undertake advanced study in the field.

Assessment: An exegesis of one selected essay in dramatic criticism (1500 words): 20% + Class paper (1500 words): 20% + Long essay (4000 words): 40% + Six theatre research methods exercises (2000 words): 20%
