Clinical indigenous psychology (6 points)

(MED)

Leader: Dr P LeVine

Offered:
Clayton First semester 2004 (Day)
Clayton First semester 2005 (Day)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On completion of this unit participants will have: 1. Developed skills for rapport building within and outside Aboriginal communities (across children, adolescents, and adults). 2. Gained an understanding of the meaning and use of substances abuse on and in Aboriginal communities (urban, rural and remote). 3. Developed a practical understanding of the culture-bound nature of the DSM-IV and ICD-9 and how communities (internationally) have adapted and replaced certain categories of diagnosis in order to make its use more responsive to context. (The Aboriginal community may be able to draw upon adaptations made to diagnosis by other communities outside Australia and North America). 4. Gained skills in debriefing and self care for service providers' physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, given the potential for 'vicarious trauma' in mental health workers. 5. Learned to maintain skills that facilitate constructive crisis interventions and knowledge of how to assess and handle substance abuse situations in Aboriginal contexts. 6. Gained referral skills within and between Aboriginal communities and mainstream services in ways that increase dialogue and impact culturally responsive assessments and treatment. 7. Learned treatment methods that increase clients' constructive engagements (and re-engage) with her or his natural and social environments over time. 8. Grasped ethical issues in cross cultural practice (for instance, assessing the norms of a test and not applying it to populations outside the norms; or assessing when to use interpreters from within or outside one's community).

Assessment: Journal focusing on ethics in trauma assessment: 20% + Two case studies with oral presentation: 50% + Role play with video session in class: 30%
