Synopsis:

Objectives: At the completion of this unit students are expected to: a) evaluate the physical and developmental level of a child; b) appraise and critically discuss family dynamics as they influence the health and well being of a child; c) demonstrate skills of the nurse as it relates to child health promotion and prevention of illness; d) discuss the importance of adopting a family centered approach when caring for children; e) assess the impact that a health crisis has on the patient and family; f) reflect on their own clinical practice and critically evaluate whether they provide care that is consistent with a patient and family centered philosophy; g) identifies the need for, delivers and evaluates appropriate nursing interventions which support the basic needs and comfort of the patient and family with a health crisis; and h) develop critical thinking in relation to the philosophical and theoretical underpinning of child and family health.
