Synopsis:

Objectives: On successful completion of the course students should be able to: 1. demonstrate an understanding of the critical texts on ethics; 2. critically formulate a 'minimal' working model of ethics derived from post-structuralist critical theory; 3. elaborate this model in the context of post-structuralist readings of traditional ethics; 4. analyse a variety of popular and mass culture texts, using the 'minimal' working model of ethics, in terms of their radical or conformist orientation. 5. formulate a short critique, in oral form, that will generate a seminar discussion; 6. formulate a longer critique, in written form, that will demonstrate a successful application of critical theory to the analysis of a cultural text with special reference to the question of ethics.

Assessment: Seminar Paper (1,000 words): 20% + Major Essay (5,000 words): 50% + Take Home Exam (3,000 words): 30%

Contact Hours: One three-hour seminar per week
