Synopsis:

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate: 1. A critical awareness of the means of state control of various forms of collective expression and dissent. 2. An understanding of public order policing and the diverse strategies employed in controlling public disorder. 3. The skill to analyse arguments in relation to contentious theories and issues of crowd behaviour and order maintenance. 4. An ability to present a fluent and logical argument in relation to the connection between liberty and order. 5. An ability to formulate ideas about the appropriate balance between citizen liberties and state control. 6. An understanding of the factors influencing protest, police and state violence.

Assessment: Tutorial participation: 10% + Tutorial presentation (equivalent to 500 words): 10% + Essay (2000 words): 40% + Exam (2 hours): 40%

Prerequisites: CJC1001/1002 (These units are only prerequisites if the student wishes to undertake a CJC major. This unit can be taken as an elective without prerequisites.)
